Harry Potter and the Bible
When the seventh and final book in the Harry Potter series came out, it became the fastest selling book of all time. 15 million copies sold in the first day worldwide. With the fury over the huge sales of the Harry Potter books, one news writer commented that Potter could be “as big as the Bible.”
Lets compare the printing of the Potter series (all 7) and the Bible. Potter has been translated in 60 languages, the Bible, 2,233. Copies printed of all Potter books reach close to 400 million; the Bible, six billion. The comparison is laughable. It is like comparing the speed of a turtle and a SR-71 Blackbird, the world’s fastest jet which can travel at Mach 3.3 or 3.3 times the speed of sound (2,475 mph).
Over 622 million Bibles and Scripture portions are given out by Bible societies and Gideon’s International each year. That’s twelve million a week! That doesn’t include Bibles printed to be sold.
The Bible stands above all other literature for its appeal, century after century and nation after nation. It is like no other book, because its ultimate Author is like no other author. In generation after generation, lives have been radically changed by the message of the Bible. The Bible is the only book where the Author is present, every time you read it. Nothing will ever be “as big as the Bible.”
